Residential Gutters

Residential Gutters – Installation & Maintenance

Gutters are a vital part of every house. By diverting the flow of rainwater away from the siding and foundation, they protect against damage and leaks. But to be effective, gutters must be properly installed from the beginning and periodically maintained throughout their life.

Installation of Residential Gutters

A good installation of residential gutters is a system in which the various pieces are connected seamlessly together in a direct path to the downspouts. The gutters should also be free of gaps, holes, and any potential obstructions to the water flow. Similar to the wiring in a circuit, any break or interference in the path of the water flow can cause the gutter to  Each piece should be firmly attached to the fascia in the correct position and each connecting downspout should be securely attached to the adjacent exterior. To prevent water from seeping into the foundation— or worse, the house itself— the gutter system terminate at least three feet away from the base of the house. If necessary, another downspout section or plastic tubing can be added to the end to divert the water flow a safe distance away.

Gutter Maintenance

Even if your gutter system was installed perfectly, it won’t serve its purpose if isn’t maintained appropriately throughout its life. This may seem obvious, but it’s often overlooked. Leaves, branches, dirt, and granules can build up in the gutter over time, obstructing the flow of water and potentially leading to exterior damage or flooding. When and how often you clean your gutters depends on the environment of the surrounding property. For houses with trees in a five-foot proximity, we recommend cleaning the gutters several times a year, particularly in the autumn season, when the gutters will likely be filled with dead leaves and granules. Less common maintenance may include repairing worn, leaky, or damaged pieces. In these situations, when a major repair is necessary, it’s best to call a professional for consultation.
